Abstract

Mono- and di-esters of C6 and C7 alkanetrioic acids with C3-20 alkanols may be prepared by conventional esterification techniques. Many suitable reactants are given, and in Example A, a mono-C8-Oxo-ester of 1,2,4-butane tricarboxy acid is prepared from the corresponding alcohol and the acid.ALSO:Lubricating oil compositions comprise 0.25-90 wt. per cent of a C3- 20 alkyl mono- or diester of a C6- 7 tricarboxy aliphatic acid and 99.75-10 wt. per cent of a mineral and/or synthetic lubricating oil. Suitable synthetic oils are aliphatic diesters, complex esters, and esters of polyhydric alcohols, examples being given. Optional additions to the compositions include calcium petroleum sulphonate, polymethacrylates, phenyl - a - naphthylamine, p-amino diphenylamine, phenothiazine, tricresyl phosphate and sorbitan monooleate.
