Abstract

Toothpaste compositions, for treatment of hypersensitive dentin, comprise non-toxic ionizable strontium salts in an aqueous solution, which also contains a surface-active wetting agent compatible with strontium ions, the said compositions being free from appreciable amounts of substances which precipitate strontium salts are the chloride, acetate, bromide, lactate, iodide, nitrate, or salicylate. Suitable wetting agents are polyoxyethylene partial esters of polyhydric fatty acid derivatives, polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene condensate, polyoxyethylene-fatty alcohol ether, or a fatty acid N-methyl taurine condensate. The toothpaste preferably contains strontium-ion-compatible polishing agents, e.g. strontium phosphate, strontium carbonate, micronized silica, or aluminium hydroxide; and a strontium-ion-compatible bodying agent, e.g. methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, or high molecular weight polyoxy ethylene polymers. Sufficient water should be present to dissolve a therapeutically active amount of the strontium compound.
