Abstract

Acid esters of citric or tartaric acid with aliphatic polyhydric alcohols containing at least three hydroxyl groups are added to dentifrices as tartar dissolving agents. The esters, for instance the sorbite ester of citric acid may be prepared in accordance with Specifications 449,185 and 466,814, [both in Group IV]. Other agents, such as watersoluble metaphosphates or pyrophosphates, serving to dissolve insoluble calcium compounds may also be added. The dentifrices may contain the usual mechanical cleansing agents, binding agents, capillary active substances, disinfectants and flavours, examples of which are given: all these additions should be substantially free from calcium. The dentifrice should preferably be neutral or weakly acid. According to an example, a dentifrice contains sorbitol ester of citric acid, aluminium silicate, talc, bolus, kaolin, silica gel and glycerin. The prior use of phenolsulphonic acid sodium salt as a tartar-removing agent is referred to.
