Abstract

A dental paste of the type capable of checking dental caries comprises an active agent, which contains urea and dibasic ammonium phosphate, furnishing available ammonia, a substantially grit-free abrasive which does not impart alkalinity to the liquid vehicle, and a substantially neutral vehicle wherein said agent is in solution comprising a stabilizer to check crystallization of said agent with drop in temperature. The urea is 10-20 per cent, and preferably 13 per cent, and the dibasic ammonium phosphate 2 to 10 per cent, and preferably 3 per cent, based on the weight of the paste. The vehicle may be glycerol, sorbitol and water in the proportions of 10 to 20, and preferably 14.5 per cent sorbitol, 8 to 15 and preferably 10 per cent glycerol, and 15 to 25 and preferably 16 to 17 per cent water. The abrasive may be tricalcium phosphate in the proportion of 35 to 40 per cent, and preferably 38 to 39 per cent of the paste. A surface active agent, fungicide and germicide, flavouring agent e.g. essential oil and saccharin, taste cloaking agent e.g. aminoacetic acid and a bodying and adhesive agent e.g. methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose may be incorporated in the paste which is then adjusted to a pH 6.9 to 7.1 by the addition of phosphoric acid. Specified fungicides and germicides are hydroxy halogens, diphenylalkanes e.g. 2,21-dihydroxy-5,51-dichloro diphenyl methane and 2,21-dihydroxy-3,5,6,31, 51,61 hexachloro-diphenylmethane. Suitable surface active agents have the general formula (R1-SO4-R2)X where R1 is a fatty acid of 12 to 18 carbon atoms R2 is an acetate or an aminoethyl complex and X is an alkali metal e.g. sodium lauryl sulphoacetate.
