Abstract

Acyl-tyrosines of the formula <FORM:0792389/IV (b)/1> where RCO is the residue of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid of 8-20 carbon atoms (with or without one or more hydroxy groups) are prepared by reacting the acid chloride (from the acid and phosphorus pentachloride) with a tyrosine ester (from hydrogen chloride on a suspension of tyrosine in an alcohol) and hydrolysing the ester group. An example is given of the preparation of lauroyl chloride, tyrosine methyl ester, N-lauroyl-tyrosine methyl ester and sodium N-lauroyl-tyrosinate. The N-oleoyl and N-ricinoleoyl compounds are also mentioned. The products form alkali metal, ammonium, magnesium and alkylamine (e.g. mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine) salts.ALSO:Dentifrice compositions contain an N-acyl tyrosine of the formula: <FORM:0792389/VI/1> where RCO is the residue of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid of 8-20 carbon atoms (with or without one or more hydroxy groups), or an alkali metal, ammonium, magnesium or alkylamine salt thereof. The amount present may be 0.1-5 per cent by weight of a liquid dentifrice or 0.5-5 per cent by weight of a solid or semi-solid dentifrice. The preferred amount is 2-4.5 per cent. Other ingredients may be (1) a mild abrasive such as calcium carbonate or phosphate; (2) a viscous aqueous medium containing glycerol, sorbitol or propylene glycol and a gelling agent such as gum tragacanth, sodium alginate, sodium carragheenate or carboxymethyl-cellulose; (3) a flavouring agent (e.g. peppermint, saccharin), perfume, colouring agent and preservative; (4) a wetting agent, e.g. soap or lauryl sulphate; and (5) a sequestering agent such as a condensed phosphate. Examples are given of creams, powder, and elixin in ethanol.
