Abstract

An oral preparation contains a water-soluble chlorophyll compound and a higher aliphatic acyl amide of an amino carboxylic acid having 12 to 16 carbon atoms in the higher acyl radical and 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the aliphatic portion of the amino carboxylic acid compound. The amide may be of formula: <FORM:0758216/VI/1> where R-CO is a saturated fatty acyl radical containing 12 to 16 carbon atoms e.g. dodecanoyl, tetra and hexadecanoyl radicals; R1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and X is a hydrogen atom or a cation which forms water-soluble salts e.g. sodium, potassium, ammonium, guanidine, mono-, di- or triethanolamine. The chlorophyll compound e.g. sodium or potassium copper-, sodium or potassium magnesium-, or sodium iron chlorophyllin, or sodium potassium copper chlorophyll, may be present up to one per cent by weight and the amide up to 5 per cent by weight of the preparation; the ratio by weight of chlorophyll compound to amide being from 1 : 500 to 1 : 2. Suitable amino acids from which the amides may be derived are glycine, sarcasine, alanine, valine, and 3-aminopropanoic acid and specified amides are sodium or potassium N-lauroyl sarcaside and N-lauroyl sarcasine, N-myristoyl sarcaside, N-palmitoyl sarcaside, and N-lauroyl glycide. The preparation may take the form of toothpaste, cream or powder, liquid dentifrice, mouthwash or tablet. The pH of the preparation is between 5 and 10. Other substances which may be present are ethyl alcohol, glycerine, sorbitol, propylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, gum tragacanth, starch, saccharine, urea, bentonite, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, aluminium hydroxide, diammonium phosphate, di and tri-calcium phosphate, alkali metal salts of pyro-, tripoly- and tetraphosphoric acids, ethylene diamine tetracetic and citric acids.
