An oral composition for retarding the formation of dental calculus comprises (1) from 0.01-10% by weight of a polyphosphonate of formula in which R 1 and R 2 are H or -CH 2 OH; n is an integer from 3 to 10; R 3 is H, C 1 -C 20 alkyl, C 2 -C 20 alkenyl, aryl, phenylethenyl, benzyl, halogen, amino, substituted amino, -CH 2 COOH, -CH 2 CH(PO 3 H 2 ) 2 , -CH 2 PO 3 H 2 , -CH(PO 3 H 2 )(OH) or -CH 2 CH 2 PO 3 H 2 ; R 4 is H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, amino, benzyl, halogen, hydroxyl, -CH 2 COOH, -CH 2 PO 3 H 2 or -CH 2 CH 2 PO 3 H 2 or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, and (2) a water-soluble source of fluoride ion, as defined, in an amount sufficient to provide a mole ratio of polyphosphonate to fluoride from 0.1:1 to 5.0:1, the pH of the composition being in the range 5.0-11.0. A large number of suitable polyphosphonates and fluorides are specified. The compositions may be in the form of dentifrices, mouthwashes, prophylaxis pastes and topical solutions.
