Abstract
1,160,640. Anti-caries compositions. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 29 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 59117/67. Heading A5B. [Also in Division C2] An oral composition for caries prophylaxis comprises:-(a) at least one water-soluble fluoride in a quantity sufficient to provide from 25 to 4000‹ parts of fluoride ions per million parts by weight of the composition, and (b) from 0.05% to 5.0% by weight of at least one distannous salt of a gem-diphosphonic acid having the formula:- wherein R 1 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, benzyl, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, methoxyalkyl or carboxyalkyl and has up to 12 carbon atoms and R 2 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, acetyl, phenyl, benzyl, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, methoxyalkyl or carboxyalkyl and has up to 12 carbon atoms. Many distannous diphosphonates are specified, distannous methanoediphosphonate and distannous ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate being preferred. The water-soluble fluoride may be an inorganic fluoride, an amine hydrofluoride, a hydroxyalkyl alkyl anarnonium fluoride of specified type or an addition compound of an amino acid and an hydrofluoric acid or a fluoride. The preferred fluoride is stannous fluoride used in a quantity sufficient to provide a total amount of at least 300 parts per million of stannous tin. The pH of the compositions is suitably between 2.5 and 7. Other usual components of dentrifices and mouthwashes may be present e.g. abrasive materials, sudsing agents, binders, humectants, flavouring and sweetening materials, and in the case of toothpaste, a thickening material e.g. water-soluble salts of cellulose ethers, natural gums, colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate or finely divided silica are generally added.
