Abstract

990,282. Insulators. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRO-CERAMIQUE. Jan. 26, 1962, No. 29809/64. Divided out of 990,281. Heading H2C. In a suspension insulator, a pair of end fittings 2, which act as mechanical supports and carry arcing horns 4, have hooked portions which are embedded in an insulating body 10 and are linked by a glass fibre loop which is pretensioned so as to maintain the insulator body in compression. The body is provided with a helical shed 13 and is coated with P.T.F.E. which volatilizes under the action of an arc without leaving a carbon track, and makes the surface hydrophobic. In the embodiment of the invention described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown) the insulating body is hollow and is filled with a plastics material having a coefficient of expansion matched to that of the housing, e.g. a polyester or an epoxy resin.
