Abstract

[Also in Division B8] In a mechanism, for supplying powdered plastic material to a moulding press, the material is sucked from a trough 2 into a container 4, positioned above the press, by a rotary piston vacuum pump 21, the material being retained within the container by a screen 17 and supported therein by a flap 8 biased closed by a spring 11. The inlet pipe 20 of the pump is connected, via pipe 24 and throttle opening 26, to an air receiver 25, which carries a vacuum senser 27 which operates a switch 29 in the control circuit 14 of the pump motor 16. As the density of the material in the container increases the vacuum in the air receiver increases until at a certain value the sensing means 27 is actuated to open switch 29 and stop the motor 16. At this point the weight of the material opens flap 8, thus discharging the material into the moulding press (not shown) and opening switch 13, in control circuit 14. As the flap opens the pressure in the air receiver increases thus reclosing the switch 29. When all the material has been discharged the flap recloses thus reclosing the switch 13 and restarting the motor 16 to initiate another cycle. Any temporary increase in pressure due to e.g. blockage in feed pipe 3, is transmitted only slowly to the air-receiver due to the throttle opening 26 and does not operate the vacuum sensing means.
