In a device for continuously feeding powdered materials from a hopper 1, Fig. 2, to a pneumatic conveying line 11D a fluidizing chamber 6F adapted to receive powder from the hopper 1 through an outlet 5 and funnel 8 and from which the powder is drawn by a Venturi device 11G, has the level of powder maintained above a predetermined minimum by automatic control means. In the example of Fig. 2 the fluidizing chamber 6F is yieldingly supported by a spring 9J acting through a lever system 9E and arranged so that the change in weight of the hopper 6F operates a micro-switch 10A to control the supply of fluidizing air to the hopper 1, thereby controlling the flow of powder through the outlet 5. Air is supplied to the system through chamber 11 (not shown) attached to the casing 1A and having variable aperture outlets leading to plenum chambers 4, 7 for porous tiles 4D, 7A at the bases of the hopper 1 and container 6F. The supply to the chamber 4 is controlled from the microswitch 10A through a solenoid operated valve 12 (not shown). An additional variable outlet is provided for connection of the conveying line 11D. A baffle 8A is provided in the funnel 8 to separate the incoming powder from the suction intake 11H of the conveyer. A vibrator 15 may also be attached to the hopper 1. In a modification the container 6F is rigidly held and the flow of fluidizing air is controlled by a timer device which is adjusted until the required minimum level of powder is obtained. A device for heating the air supply may be provided to prevent absorption of moisture. Specification 980,431 is referred to.
