Abstract
In the control of discrete material flow into a hopper (24), a vibratory feeder (6) has depending from its delivery end housing (4) a metering plate (2) which extends freely into the hopper (24). The discharge outlet (26) of the hopper (24) communicates with a venturi feeder (30). In use, the feed rate of the feeder (6) is initially set at a greater flow rate than the entrainment rate of material into the airstream passing through the feeder (30). The material builds up in hopper (24) and damps the vibration of the plate (2) and thus slows down the feeder (6) thereby reducing the discharge of material therefrom into the hopper (24). The entrainment rate of the feeder (30) gradually exceeds the flow of material to the hopper (24) and thus more of the plate (2) is uncovered thereby reducing the damping affect and allowing the feeder (6) to increase its delivery to the hopper (24). An automatic control is thus afforded. <IMAGE>
