A method of controlling the operation of an electrically controlled pressure die-casting machine by the weight of a casting released from the mould consists in restricting movement of a pivoted weighing surface until cessation of oscillation due to a casting falling thereon, and then allowing the surface to deflect so that if the casting has its predetermined weight the surface tilts far enough to close a switch in an operation-controlling circuit and causes discharge of the casting thereon to permit the surface to return to its normal position where it actuates a further switch, the non-actuation of the first switch stopping the machine operation, with or without a signal that the machine is inoperative. The weighing apparatus includes a scale pan 5 on to which the casting is ejected. If the weight of the casting is as prescribed the scale beam 1 tilts, the mould closing movement is permitted and the casting is removed from the pan 5 by engagement of the pan supporting lever 6 with a stop 8, the casting falling on to a shoot 9.
