Abstract

A process for the decorative enamelling of relatively large surface areas of domestic appliances comprises the use of a carrier enamel layer and a decorative enamel layer applied thereto, the surface tensions of the compositions of the said layers being substantially different so that during a subsequent stoving or firing operation, the decorative enamel layer sinks into the carrier enamel layer so as to produce a decorative surface with a relief effect. The surface tension of the carrier enamel layer is preferably made substantially greater than the surface tension of the decorative enamel layer, e.g. by including a tin or antimony based turbidifying agent in the carrier enamel and by adding fluxing agents to the decorative enamel. The carrier enamel preferably contains as additives 4-9% of colouring substances, 4-6% of clay, 0.25-0.5% of a flotation agent such as sodium nitrite, at least 1.2% of sodium fluosilicate, at least 1% of a finely divided silica and 0.1-0.25% of a surface active ampholyte. The decorative enamel layer is preferably applied by embedding in a polyester based foil by a silk screen process, the foil then being stuck to the surface of a fired carrier enamel layer and the two layers jointly fired. The process may be applied, for example, to the decorating of cast iron domestic stoves.
