Abstract
A process for the decorative enamelling of articles, e.g cast-iron stoves, ovens and cookers, refrigerators, bath tubs) comprises treating a dry, unfired layer of carrier enamel with a binder medium, thereafter applying to the surface of the carrier enamel a synthetic plastics foil in which is embedded an unfired layer of decorative enamel, the surface tensions of the compositions of the carrier enamel and the decorative enamel being substantially different, and subjecting the layer of carrier enamel and the layer of decorative enamel to a single firing, whereby the decorative enamel sinks into the carrier enamel so as to produce a decorative surface with relief effect, the foil being burned away without appreciable residue. The binder medium may be aqueous suspension of methyl cellulose, polyvinylacetate and polyethylene glycol. The carrier enamel should be substantially free of water-soluble shading salts and may be coloured by lithium phosphate and/or lithium carbonate, both water insoluble. The carrier enamel should be coarsely ground with a uniform grain size distribution and should also contain only a minimum proportion of clay which should be a lean clay.
