Abstract
A surface having only a base enamel layer is decoratively enamelled by the application of a polyester resin foil printed with a decorative top coat enamel layer and optionally at least one vitrifiable transparent or coloured enamel, followed by stoving during which the foil burns away without appreciable residue, the surface tension (S.T.) of the top coat enamel being appreciably less than that of the base enamel. The enamels are embedded in the foil by a silk screen printing process. If used, the transparent or coloured enamel forms a pattern, the spaces in which are filled by the top coat enamel; or the coloured enamel may be embedded in a closed top coat enamel layer. The top coat enamel need not contain conventional additives of clay and flotation agents. The S.T. of the base enamel is desirably greater than the sum of the top coat enamel S.T. and the top coat/base enamel boundary S.T. If the transparent or coloured enamel S.T. is lower than the top coat S.T., the former enamel will sink into the latter during stoving to produce a desirable relief-like effect.
