Abstract

989,034. Valves. CLAYTON MARK & CO. Oct. 23, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961 (2); No. 40045/62. Heading F2V. A ball valve has a closure element 24 movable downstream within the body 20 when rotated to flow-stopping position and a seal 32 having a surface 32A which is in contact with a complementary tapered surface 112 in the body when the element is in the flow-permitting position and separates from that surface when the element is moved downstream so that an annular passage 114 is provided to equalize pressures at opposite sides of the seal. In the preferred embodiment, two seals are provided and the valve body is connected to pipes 12, 14 by union nuts 16B, 18B which allow the body to be adjusted angularly about the pipe axis. A slot in the closure element forms a driving connection with a tongue 58 on a spindle 34 having a seal 54 and a thrust washer 50. A handle 26 and an L-shaped plate 38 co-operating with a pin 44 enable the spindle to be rotated and limit its travel to 90 degrees.
