[Also in Division F1] A double-acting fluid pressure ram or the equivalent which may have pads fitted to the ends of its rods 3, 4, Fig. 1 for engaging the side walls of a tunnel to guide the cutting head of a coal-cutting machine comprises a pair of non-return valves 16, 17 connected one to each working space 5, 6 of the ram and adapted to supply fluid at high pressure to each space, and a pair of control valves 9, 11 also connected one to each working space and each capable of closing or opening to retain or vent high pressure fluid within its associated working space. Both control valves are solenoid operated and in their unenergized condition fluid is prevented from leaving the working spaces 5, 6 by the non-return valves 16, 17. If one or the other of the control valves is energized, the associated working space is connected to a reservoir line 13 or 15 so that fluid pressure from a line 18 passes through one of the non-return valves to the other space to move the piston or, alternatively, the cylinder. In another embodiment having two rams 21, 22 Fig. 2 having pistons 23, 29 with different sized rods 25, 26, 32, 34, the spaces 27, 33 associated with the larger sized rods are connected by a common pipe 36, control valve 37 and non-return valve 41 to a line 42 from a high pressure source. The line 42 is also connected by non-return valves 47, 53 and control valves 44, 49 to the spaces 28, 35 associated with the smaller-sized rods. With all control valves unenergized, the pistons are locked in position. Energization of the solenoid controlling valve 37 vents the spaces 27 and 33 so that the pistons move towards each other. Energization of the solenoid controlling valve 44 or 49 will vent the associated space 28 or 35 to cause outward movement of piston 23 or 29. When the solenoids controlling both valves 44, 49 are energized, both pistons will move outwardly. In other embodiments, the rams may have diaphragms or bellows to define the working spaces.
