Abstract

988,186. Electromagnetic waveguides; electric cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 28, 1962, No. 36889/62. Headings H1A and H1W. A protective casing for a conductor, e.g. a waveguide for the H 01 mode, a transmission line or submarine cable, comprises a number of concentric, grooved, helically wound, metallic bands, at least two adjacent bands being interlocked. The casing may be applied to a circular H 01 waveguide comprising a winding 3 of enamelled copper wire bound by an epoxy resin medium 4, and a dissipative modesuppressing layer 5. It consists of two interlocking steel bands 6, 7. A second pair of bands (not shown) may be wound over the first pair with an angle of lay opposite to that of the first pair. Alternatively, three bands may be used, the centre band having interlocking tongues and grooves on both faces. The tongues and grooves may be tapered or may have rounded corners.
