In a submarine cable having polyethylene insulated pairs or quads stranded together and armoured with a layer of galvanized steel wires embedded in servings of jute roving, the loading coils of the cable are arranged in a plurality of sealed units arranged along the axis of the cable with the conductors of the cable laid around the coil units. As shown, the coils are placed in pot cores, the pot cores are placed in metal housings and each housing is embedded in polyethylene. Each assembly so formed is generally cylindrical as illustrated with one convex end 6 and one concave end 7. A cable conductor (or leads 1, 2 to which the conductor is connected) enters each assembly through a ridge 8 which may extend axially or in the direction of lay of the cable. A number of assemblies are placed end to end and connected to the conductors of the cable, and armouring in the form of a layer of galvanized steel wires between two layers of jute is applied. Dummy assemblies may be inserted between adjacent assemblies which are to be connected to the same conductor.
