Abstract
986,174. Chain-tensioning arrangements. BORG-WARNER Ltd. Dec. 16, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962; March 28, 1963], Nos. 49177/62 and 12350/63. Heading F2Q. A chain tensioner, e.g. for a cam-shaft drive, comprises a blade 13 of plastics material, e.g. nylon or a hard synthetic rubber, approximately the width of the chain 12, one end 16 being attached to a fixed fulcrum and the other end 14 forming a floating fulcrum resting against a guide 15, and a tension spring 17 extending between the fulcrums or between the floating fulcrum and an intermediate point on the blade. The fixed fulcrum is usually adjacent the driving sprocket 10, and the working surface of the blade may be faced with a soft synthetic rubber. The plastics material of the blade will acquire a permanent set conforming to the natural line of the slack flight of the chain. The blade may be of uniform thickness along its length, or have thickened ends tapering progressively toward the centre portion. Fig. 3 shows a blade of reduced thickness adjacent its ends, the main portion 20 of the blade thickening progressively toward the centre. The portion 20 may be of channel or T section with the taper on the flange(s) 21 thereof. In another blade form, the thickness progressively reduces from the fixed fulcrum to the floating fulcrum. Blades for use with longer chain flights have a " steady " near the midpoint (Figs. 7 and 8). In Fig. 7, the floating fulcrum 18 is pin jointed at 26 to one end of a slide 27 bearing against a fixed surface 28, a link 30 being pin jointed to the other end of slide 27 and to the blade mid-point. Fig. 8 shows a single flexible member 33 pin jointed at 26 to the floating fulcrum and at 34 to the blade midpoint, the spring 32 connecting the ends of member 33. The pin 34 may be omitted to give a sliding contact. Members 27 and 33 are preferably of a high friction plastics material to provide damping. To obviate flutter of roller chains, the fixed fulcrum end may be shaped to follow the chain path where the chain tends to cling to the driving sprocket as it leaves the latter.
