In an engine timing or other drive a chain 3 is tensioned by a replaceable slipper 5 mounted on a length 4 of spring strip bent into a substantially closed loop and having a single mounting point 7, the two adjacent ends 6, 9 of the loop having unidirectional locking engagement with each other. As shown, the end 6 forms a pawl engaging ratchet teeth 9, or converging sets of teeth 8, 9 (Fig. 3), formed on the other end of the loop 4. In a modification the ratchet teeth are formed on a plastics or rubber block in which the folded-back end of the loop is embedded. In a further modification the end 6 engages frictional ratchet rollerlocking means on the other end of the loop, the locking roller being movable along inclined slots.
