985,847. Discharging material from shaft furnaces; revolving grates. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES Ltd. April 22, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 15697/63. Heading F4B. A rotary extractor 18 for removing material from a shaft furnace 10, Fig. 1, which may be a converter for the extraction of aluminium by the sub-halide process, comprises a substantially conical rotary member in which the sections taken in planes perpendicular to the control axis are substantially circular at the lower end and become progressively more oval at higher levels, tending to a straight line near the top of the extractor, Fig. 3. The top of the extractor may form a chisel edge 23 bisected by the central axis about which the extractor rotates. The surface of the extractor may have ridges 20, formed round the surface at different levels. Since the weight on the extractor is substantially symmetrically distributed about the axis, and the irregularities on the surface have no side edges, the wear of the extractor and its bearings is minimized.
