985,789. Electrostatic precipitators. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN. July 6, 1962 [July 12, 1961], No. 26092/62. Heading B2J. Means for rapping the electrodes of an electrostatic precipitator comprises a rotatable, preferably horizontal shaft 3, provided with one or more hammers 2, and actuated by a driving means, e.g. a motor 7 mounted on the wall 1 of the precipitator, which is electrically insulated from the shaft 3 by an intermediate insulating element 4, the insulating element being enclosed in a separate chamber 8 connected to the precipitator casing, the chamber being connected to a unit (not shown) for supplying scavenging air under pressure, and a branch pipe 9 being provided around the shaft 3 to project into the precipitator for discharging the scavenging air laden with dust from the chamber 8. The scavenging air is delivered through an inlet 12 into a manifold 11 and enters the chamber 8 radially through a perforated cylinder 10 mounted coaxially in the chamber. Alternatively the air may be given a rotary motion by supplying it tangentially to the chamber 8 at the end remote from the precipitator. The scavenging air prevents dust from settling on the element 4 or in the chamber 8 thus eliminating the risk of a flashover.
