Abstract

Class 39(1) In a two-stage electrostatic precipitator having at least one pervious non-discharging electrode 2<SP>1</SP> in the charging zone, the distance between the electrode 2<SP>1</SP> and the discharge electrodes 3 is adjustable while the precipitator is in operation. As shown, the electrode 2<SP>1</SP> comprise wire nets partly surrounding the individual discharge electrodes in semicircles. The non-discharging electrodes may be moved manually or automatically so as to ensure that the distance between them and the discharge electrodes is maintained as near the sparking distance as is practicable. Preferably the voltage in the charging zone is determined by the voltage in the collecting zone 4, A further set of pervious non-discharging electrodes may be provided downstream of the discharge electrodes.
