Abstract

849,928. Centrifugal separators. BAMFORD, W. D., and HIGHAM, J. B. Oct. 17, 1958 [July 22, 1957], No. 23064/57. Class 23 [Also in Group XL(a)] An electro-mechanical separator for removing suspended matter from a gas stream comprises a cyclone separator in which an electrical field is provided to assist the separation and a preliminary electrical field is provided to charge the suspended matter before it enters the cyclone. The cyclone may be of the reverse-flow or multiple straight-flow type and a discharging or non-discharging electrode is provided centrally within it. In the reverse-flow cyclone shown the central electrode 7 is a serrated strip cruciform discharge electrode. In another embodiment the gas outlet tube 6 is insulated form the main body of the cyclone and carries discharge electrodes which may be in the form of a wire cage.
