Abstract

854,816. Electrostatic precipitation. HOWDEN & CO. Ltd., J. May 28, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 17307/58. Class 39(1). An electrostatic precipitator is provided with a shield electrode or grid between the discharge electrodes and counter collecting electrodes in order to control or adjust the operating conditions. The shield or grid may be connected to an adjustable source of potential, or to earth through a variable resistor, or left unconnected, or a potential may be applied to the shield electrode and the discharge electrode left unconnected. In the tubular arrangement shown, the discharge electrode structure consists of two sections 20, 21 each with a discharge electrode 23 provided with points 24 and a surrounding shield electrode 25 provided with apertures opposite the discharge points. The two sections are joined together and spaced by a central insulator 28 and external sleeve 38. Additional insulations may be provided to space the shield electrodes from the discharge electrode. The discharge points in each section are in two groups, the points in each group extending at 90 degrees to each other and the points of the two groups angularly spaced by 45 degrees. Further, one section is turned through 22¢ degrees with respect to the other. The discharge electrodes in the two sections may be connected to separate sources of potential. The precipitation may comprise a circular bank of tubular electrodes cleaned by scavenging gas supplied by rotating hoods top and bottom of the structure, or the electrodes may be cleaned by rapping. The precipitator may be of the parallel-plate type. According to the Provisional Specification the tubular collecting electrodes may be of hexagonal cross-section.
