Abstract

Palladium is electrodeposited from a solution containing a source of palladium ions or palladium-containing ions, a source of ammonium ions and a source of sulphamate ions of pH 5-9. The palladium may be at least partly provided by a complex palladium compound e.g. palladium diammino disulphamate, palladium diammino sulphate, ammonium palladous-dinitrito disulphamate, ammonium palladous dinitrito sulphate, disulphamato-dinitrito palladous acid, sulphato-dinitrito-palladous acid. An aqueous solution containing Pd(NH3)2 (NH2SO3)2 and Pd(NH3)2SO4 is prepared by reacting Pd(NH3)2(NO2)2 with sulphamic acid at below 50 DEG C. and pH above 5 by addition of ammonia. NH4NO2 is also formed. An aqueous solution containing Pd(NH3)2 (NH2SO3)2 and NH4NO2 and (NH4)2Pd(NH2 SO3)2(NO2)2 is obtained by reacting Pd(NH3)2 is obtained by reacting Pd(NH3)2 (NO2)2 with NH4NH2SO3 at above pH 5 and below 50 DEG C. In an example NH4NH2SO3 was dissolved in water and the pH adjusted to 7 by addition of ammonia. Palladium diammino dinitrite in ammonia was added and also Ni NH2SO3 and the pH adjusted to 7.3-7.8 by addition of sulphamic acid. The bath composition may be in grams/litre: Pd (calculated as metal) 4-100 NH4NO2 4-100, NH4 NH2SO3 20-160, Ni(NH2SO3)2 0-1 ammonia to give pH 6-8 and the working conditions are: temperature 15-35 DEG C., strike voltage 2-4, working voltage 1.3-1.8, current density 2-40 amps/sq. foot, cathode efficiency at 35 DEG C. at least 95% or at 5 amps/sq. foot 34 mgms. of Pd/amp. min. The anodes may be of platinum or palladium and the vessel containing the electrolyte may be made of or lined with glass, " Perspex " (Registered Trade Mark), polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or austenitic stainless steel. Printed circuit boards may be plated in the solution (see Division H1).
