Abstract

985,364. Shotgun cartridges. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 8, 1963 [Sept. 18, 1962], No. 31362/63. Heading F3A. A shotgun cartridge is provided as described in Specification 938,091, buckshot being used in place of the small lead shot of the earlier Specification and the interstices between the shot being filled with particles of non-metallic cushioning material softer than the shot. Synthetic or natural materials may be used either in powder form or as a frangible matrix. Examples of suitable materials are given, such as cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, cellulose butyrate or ethyl cellulose, acrylic resins, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, polyamides, rigid urethanes and cellular materials such as corn meal, or sawdust. Any metal may be used for the shot, but lead or a lead alloy containing antimony is preferred. The shot may be plated with an alloy of copper, or with copper to increase the hardness.
