984,668. Reciprocating pumps. ALPURA A.G. Nov. 26, 1962 [Nov. 27, 1961], No. 44699/62. Heading F1A. A pump for the homogenisation of milk includes a plunger 6 actuated by a crank (not shown) and the plunger passes through a gland 11, 12, 13. Before pumping, the pump is sterilised by passing a sterilising agent such as hot water or superheated steam into the bore 2 with the pump running and into a bore 19 leading to a clearance space 16. This space is as long as or preferably longer axially than the stroke 7 of the plunger. When the pump has reached sterilisation temperature, pumping of the milk commences and the pump is kept at strilisation temperature by passing the sterilising agent through the clearance 16. This also prevents any part of the plunger which passes into the pump body from coming into contact with the atmosphere. In an alternative embodiment the plunger may be supported by two axially spaced glands and a controlled flow of sterile coolant passed therebetween to regulate the pump temperature, the clearance 16 through which sterilising agent is also passed being located beyon the second seal. In a further alternative the open end of the clearance 16 may be closed by a second seal and the flow of sterilising agent therethrough regulated.
