Abstract
984,135. Connecting rods. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. June 16, 1961 [June 18, 1960], No. 21818/61. Heading F2T. The end 8 of a connecting rod 10 bears against a surface 7 provided on an auxiliary piston 3 sealingly displaceable, in an axial bore 2 in the main piston 1, e.g. of a pump, against the pressure of a spring 5 located between the auxiliary piston and the bottom 4 of the bore, the auxiliary piston being provided with a through bore 9. The fluid to be pumped surrounds the piston on all sides and serves as lubricant between the bearing surfaces of the auxiliary piston and connecting rod. A ring 6 is interposed between the auxiliary piston and the bottom 4 of the main piston bore. Alternatively, the auxiliary piston is provided with a recess on its end facing opposite the bottom 4. The auxiliary piston may be of porous, e.g. sintered, material which may be soaked by the fluid. The connecting rod 10 is supported by its spherical head 8 on a member 12 held in the main piston by a spring ring 11. During the forward stroke of the piston movement of the auxiliary piston against the spring 5 causes fluid in the space between the auxiliary piston and the bottom 4 to be forced through the bore 9 and between the bearing surfaces 7, 8. The amount of fluid forced through is related to the compression sustained by the spring which is selected so that it is fully compressed at maximum pump delivery pressure. During the return stroke the auxiliary piston is returned to its original position whereby fluid flows past the bearing surfaces into the space between the auxiliary piston and the bottom 4 since pressure between the bearing surfaces is relieved.
