Abstract

983,898. Gear pumps. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. June 8, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 21086/60. Heading F1F. A gear pump is provided with an inlet port in an end wall so that the operating liquid flows axially into the pump. The radial distance of the outer edges of the inlet port from the axis of each rotor decreases in the direction of rotation so that the outer portions of the tooth gaps are separated from the inlet before the inner portions. The area of tooth exposed to the inlet is reduced by cutting away (as at 6) the trailing flanks of the teeth of the driving gear and the leading flanks 4 of the teeth of the driven gear, that is, those flanks not in sealing engagement. Backlash is prevented by leaving part of the flanks 12 uncut. Inlets may be formed in each end wall, both ends of the teeth being cut away.
