Abstract

982,350. Welder's masks. H. BURMEISTER. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 19 1962], No. 5136/63. Heading G2J. A welder's mask comprises a head cap and a face shield with a vision slot therein, and a flap for holding a filter member is pivotally mounted adjacent the slot by means of two axle pins, one of which carries a crank formation engaged by a traction element which is operable by an intermediate member to which an actuating element is secured, the actuating element being so arranged as to be engageable with and actuatable by the body of the wearer. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7, a mask 1 has a flap 6 pivotable on bolts 9,10 and urged into closed position by means of spring 62, the tension of which is adjustable by screw and nut 65. The flap is opened when the welder moves so that his shoulder or chest touches knob 19 of rod 49 and moves it to the left thereby pivoting lever 55, 56 about pivot 57 and pulling thread 59 to pivot the flap closed by means of pin 15. A yoke 66 provides end stops for the lever 55, 56 and may comprise latching means to hold the flap in its open or closed position. The rod 49 is adjustable in a clip 50. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, pin 15 is attached to a Bowden cable 13 and rod 49 through a screw threaded sleeve to a rod 17. Cable 12 is attached to a plate 22 which can be latched in two positions one by means of notch 27 (corresponding to the open flap position) into which it is urged by spring 24 and the other by means of notch 28 (corresponding to the closed flap position) into which it is urged by pressure on rod 49 and rod 17. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 rod 22 is connected to pin 15 and rod 49 (only knob 19 shown) is connected by a screw threaded sleeve 18 and rod 36 to a crane lever 37, 38. The crank lever is pivoted at 39 and has a projection 43 which in the flap closed position is held in a recess 44 of a spring 42. The end 45 of the spring is inclined to the right so that when the lever 37, 38 in its flap closed position is urged anti-clockwise and then released, projection 43 slides along spring end 45 away from recess 44 and is then rotated past the recess by spring 40. The pivot 39 may be situated at the angle of the lever and the projection 43 may be mounted on this pivot.
