A pattern selection device for a circular knitting machine comprises an endless band 26 which co-operates with selections 20 in a number of pattern wheels, after selection the selectors are noved to an operative position and held there for the required number of rotations before return to their initial position, the selectors being movable to engage with a different row of selector control patterns on the endless band 26. In order to select a member 20 the nose 25 must arrive adjacent a part of the band 26 where there is no hole and the selector 20 will be moved to the dotted position shown in the left hand side of Fig. 1. In this position a lug 29 will be engaged by a driver 30 mounted on a guide 33 which has a nose 34 engagable in a fixed cam slot 35. The cam rises and the selector moves to the operative position shown in full lines in the right hand side of Fig. 1 where it remains for a number of revolutions until returned by known means. If a selector 20 is not selected i.e. if a hole is adjacent the lug 25 then the selector adopts the position shown in full lines in the 1.h.s of Fig. 1 and at the r.h.s. of Fig. 1 it is replaced to a non-selectable position shown in dotted lines by a cam 40. To select a separate pattern on the same band the cam 32 is raised while the selectors are in their raised position and as they come down again then their shoulders 31 engage the cam 32 and the lugs are adjacent a higher track in the pattern band. The selectors may have lugs at differring levels to be co-operative with different two-track portions of the tape.
