982,057. Retractable pouring spouts. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. May 30, 1963 [Nov. 26, 1962], No. 21762/63. Heading B8D. A retractable pouring spout 1 for drums slides within a nozzle 3 and is held in its extended position by the engagement with the nozzle wall 10 of a circumferential groove in a thickened portion 12 of the lower end of the spout which is castellated at 19, the cylindrical base 13 of the groove having a diameter slightly greater than that of the cylindrical side wall 2, and the upper wall 14 of the groove being connected to the main wall 2 by an inclined portion. The castellation 19 provides sufficient resiliency for the spout to be easily inserted into the nozzle which is made of sheet metal and is screw-threaded at 6 to receive a cap. The spout is moulded from a plastics material such as polypropylene using split cavity moulds. Where the mould members part, two diametrically o pposite ridges 22 are formed by the flashes which would destroy the seal between the groove base 13 and nozzle wall 10, but leakage is prevented by the end of the nozzle wall 10 biting into the lower wall 15 of the groove. The spout has a sharp-edged pouring lip 30 and an air vent 33, and may be rendered tamperproof in the retracted position by a metal seal frictionally engaged with the wall 8 of the nozzle. Modified forms of nozzle are described.
