Abstract

981,860. Inking apparatus. MIEHLE-GOSS-DEXTER INCORPORATED. Jan. 20, 1964 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 2379/64. Heading B6C. An inking device for a printing press comprises a rotatable fountain roller 12, an inking roller 15, a messenger roller 14 supported for oscillating movement and adapted to have intermittent contact with the rollers 12 and 15, means for effecting said movement including an oscillatable cam 58 having a peripheral portion 62 which when engaged by a follower 26 allows the messenger roller 14 to be yieldingly forced into engagement with the fountain roller 12 for a predetermined period during each cycle of operation, drive means for oscillating said cam through a uniform range of oscillation, and adjustment means including a rotatable knob 41 located in a fixed position remote from the cam for shifting the cam angularly about its axis to alter said uniform range and thereby increase or decrease the duration of the contact of the messenger roller 14 with the fountain roller 12. The cam 58 and a yoke member 30 are mounted for movement independently of the continuous rotation of their supporting shaft 13 which also carries the fountain roller 12 and the angular position of the cam and the yoke is adjusted on turning the knob 41 via a worm 36, a worm-wheel 35 and a gear segment 33 formed integrally with the yoke. The shaft 13 is driven from a shaft 44 through bevel gears 45, 46 and gear-wheels 47, 50. The cam 58 is oscillated by a drive including a gear-wheel 51 on the shaft 13, a further gear-wheel 52, a driving disc 54, and a link, Fig. 1 (not shown), which connects the disc to the cam. The quantity of ink supplied to the inking roller 15 may thus be adjusted between zero and maximum amounts by angular adjustment of the yoke, ink being transferred thereto when the portion 63 of the cam engages the follower 26.
