Abstract

1,225,466. Printing apparatus. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 9 Jan., 1970 [10 Jan., 1969], No. 1237/70. Heading B6C. [Also in Division G4] An apparatus for printing on the caps 18 of jars 10 comprises a conveyer 12, on which the jars 10 are supported at an uncontrolled spacing, and a printing cylinder 22 with printing formes 26A-26D. The cylinder 22 is normally driven from a shaft 36 by way of gears 34, 38, 42, 44, 46, and rotates approximately in synchronism with the movement of the conveyer 12. When a sensor A detects the approach of a jar 10 its position on the conveyer 12 is compared with the angular position of the cylinder 22 and a motor 40 is operated to rotate shaft 39, with gear 42 upon it, and so accelerate or decerlate the cylinder 22 as to make a printing forme contact the jar 10 in a predetermined area 20.
