Abstract

The caking tendency of sodium chloride is reduced by adding a water-soluble zirconium salt, preferably the oxychloride or basic nitrate, to brine to be evaporated or to solid sodium chloride to provide 0.0005 to 0.1 g. of zirconium per 100 g. of salt. Between 0.5 to 4 mol., per mol. of zirconium salt, of a complex-forming organic hydroxycarboxylic and/or oxalic acid or their alkali metal salts may be added. Specified are tartaric and citric acids. Comparison is made regarding the relative efficiencies of the additives according to the invention and with salt containing silica, calcium citrate, lactate or metasilicate. Specifications 752,582 and 789,565 are referred to.ALSO:Common salt of reduced caking tendency (see Division C1) contains between 0.0005 to 0.1 g., per 100 g. of salt, of a water-soluble zircomium salt, especially the oxychloride or basic nitrate, and optionally 0.5 to 4 mol of a complex-forming organic hydroxycarbolic, e.g. citric or tartaric, and/or oxalic acid, or their alkali metal salts, per mol of zirconium salt. Specifications 752,582 and 789,565 are referred to.
