Abstract

Crank-shafts, connecting rods, shafts and springs are formed from alloy steels containing 0.3-1.2% by weight of carbon which is retained in the austenite phase by quenching, the steels being both non-magnetic and non-precipitation-hardening The steels may be cold-worked up to a maximum of 20%. Particular steels exemplified contain in percentage by weight: .C.Mn.Cr.Ni.N .0.5.18.4.7.-.- .0.68.8.7.3.7.- .1.15.12.3.-.-.- .0.5.20.5.14.5.-.0.2 while other compositions referred to by way of comparison contain: .C.Mn.Cr.Ni.N.V .0.1.0.8.18.9.-.- .0.23.7.9.7.8.5.6.-.- .0.53.21.14.6.-.0.2.1.3 .0.21.20.14.1.-.0.2.- the balance in each case being iron
