Abstract

In a process and apparatus for the continuous heat-treatment of metal strip the latter is first heated by passage through a liquid heat transfer medium, is then further heated by radiation in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, and is then quenched by passage through a liquid heat transfer medium at a lower temperature than the first medium. The same liquid medium may be used both to heat and to quench the strip and is in that case circulated in counter-flow to the strip. While the strip is being subjected to radiation it may be additionally heated by the passage of electric current. As illustrated, strip 11 follows a path defined by rolls 12, 15, 19, 21 and 26, in the course of which it passes first through limbs 14 and 16 of a U-shaped channel containing a liquid heat-transfer medium, is then further heated by banks of radiant heaters 18, and is then quenched by passage through a second U-shaped channel 20, 22. Additional heat may be supplied by the input of electric current through line 30 and roll 19, rolls 15 and 21 being earthed. The liquid, which may be lead-bismuth alloy, is circulated by pump 42 through limbs 22, 20, 16 and 14 in counterflow to the strip, returning through heat exchanger 46; it is maintained at appropriate treatment temperatures by heaters 49. <PICT:0980353/C6-C7/1>
