Abstract

<PICT:0995883/C6-C7/1> In a method and apparatus for the continuous heat-treatment of strip in a controlled atmosphere there is provided adjacent to the entrance of the treatment chamber a catalyst which promotes combination of any oxygen entering with a component of the treatment atmosphere. The catalyst may be palladinized asbestos and the atmosphere may contain hydrogen. A positive pressure may be maintained in the chamber so that the reaction products are continuously expelled. As illustrated, strip 11 passes through pinch rolls 13 contained in sealing chamber 12 and then between catalyst panels 15 heated by heaters 16. It then passes through further pinch rolls 14 and into the treatment chamber 17, where it passes between further catalyst panels before meeting liquid lead-bismuth heat transfer medium 20. Specification 980,353 is referred to.
