Abstract
827,488. Manufacture of thin flat glass. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. Jan. 3, 1958 [July 17, 1957], No. 323/58. Class 56. A process for making thin flat glass sheet by drawing comprises heating a narrow transverse strip of a flat glass sheet to drawing temperature, shielding or screening the remainder of the sheet against radiation and excessive pre-heating, and subjecting the edges of said narrow transverse strip to less intense heating than the centre. As shown, the heating furnace consists of a jacket 1 and heating units 2. A strip of flat glass to be drawn is guided as far as the heating units through a narrow slot 3 in the jacket which slot is of such dimensions that the sheet passes through with a minimum clearance, the edges 5 of the glass being heated less intensely. The sheet is then drawn out as far as the rollers 4 and the process is then carried on continuously.
