980,314. Stands. EUGENE Ltd. June 22, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 22989/60. Heading A4H. A telescopic stand for holding for example a hair dryer hood on a bracket 12 has inner and outer members 11, 10, a counterbalancing spring 26 and a locking device including a plug 16 in the lower end of tube 11 providing a seating for a cup-washer 17 clamped against the plug by a flanged sleeve 18 and an actuating rod 20 carrying a tapered plug 23 and spring 19 held in place by washers or circlips 24, 25 fixed to rod 20. When the bracket 12 is not in place spring 26 pushes upwardly on plug 23 to expand washer 17 to grip tube 10 and lock the tubes in their relative position. When the hood is applied to the stand the spigot 13 of bracket 12 pushes down rod 20 to release washer 17 and the bracket can be fixed to tube 11 by a clip 14. To lock the tubes in the desired position when the locking device is in released condition a manually operated device such as a split collar and screw (not shown) is used. In a modification not shown the cup-washer 17 is replaced by circumferentially spaced shoes pivoted to the lower end of tube 11.
