Abstract
406,081. Friction grips ; stands. OLDS, S., 54, Wellhead Lane, Perry Barr, Birmingham. Oct. 12, 1933, No. 28418/32. [Class 44.] In a friction-grip device for a telescopic lamp-pendant or standard or like telescopic members and of the kind in which a braided tube, when elongated contracts radially to grip an inner member, the outer telescopic member 1 has secured thereto a sleeve extension 11 housing the braided tube 16 and a spring 19 which bears at one end against a flange 17 secured to the braided tube 16 and at the other against a cap 14 on sleeve 11. As shown, sleeve 11 is secured to member 1 by a collar 10 screwed on to sleeve 11 and on to a collar 9 brazed to member 1, and the arrangement is applied to an electric lamp pendant supported by a balljoint having rotational movement limited by stops 7, 8 to prevent twisting of the leads, not shown, which pass through the telescopic members 1, 12 to the lamp, not shown, suitably mounted at the end 15. Member 1 is of hexagonal cross-section and member 12, which passes through sleeve 11 and collar 10 into member 1, carries a hexagonal collar 13 slidable but not rotatable in member 1. Normally, tube 16 is held raised by spring 19 and grips member 12, which can be moved freely upwards, but must be pulled downwards with sufficient initial force to compress spring 19 and cause the lower end of tube 16 to abut against cap 14 to release the grip.
