979, 188. Knitting machines. MATTHEWS & BIRKHAMSHAW Ltd. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 21, 1962], No. 35938/62. Heading D1C. In a method of producing tuck patterned fabric on a straight bar knitting machine comprising forward and rearward movement of an auxiliary tricked presser bar 6 underneath the sinker bar 3 to move into alignment with tricks in the main presser edge on sinker bar 3 for plain stitch courses and out of alignment therewith for courses containing tuck stitches as in Specification 945,472 the needles are controlled to knit one tight quality for the plain courses and another slacker quality for the tuck stitch courses. For plain knitting the segments 39, 116 of top and bottom control discs 38, 114 are operative but when the tuck patterned fabric is to be knitted to the plain parts 38a, 114a of the discs are operative to control the actuation of the axuiliary presser bar 6. A larger stitch quality cam (not shown) is brought into operation for the production of courses containing tuck loops to provide additional needle lowering motion giving a longer draw.
