Abstract

In a cold-forming process for metals, the metal is immersed in an aqueous solution containing borax, a water-soluble or water-dispersible lubricant containing a high proportion of sodium stearate, removed from the liquid, and allowed to dry. The coating is stated to adhere to all types of metals, in particular, high manganese steels, 80/20 nickel-chrome alloys, titanium and its alloys, and zirconium. The coating is colourless and does not react with the surface of the material. A material for making up the solution comprises 60-85% by weight of pentahydrate borax, 10-30% of lubricant and 2 1/2 -10% of wetting agent, e.g. tri-sodium phosphate, sodium nitrate may also be included. Two examples of specific compositions are given.
