Abstract
978,690. Unwinding bobbins &c. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec.17, 1963 [March 21, 1963], No. 11250/63. Heading D1J. A mechanism for de-reeling wire or the like from bobbins has a hollow shaft 10 that is co-axial with the bobbin axis, the shaft 10 having attached thereto an arm 13 that is movable about the bobbin axis and carries pulleys 18, 19, 20 to guide the wire from its take-off point as this moves around the bobbin. The pulleys 18, 19, 20 guide the wire to the hollow shaft 10 and the wire 10 then passes up the shaft 10 to a take-off pulley 23. Slackness in the wire, caused by over-running of the pulleys, is prevented by a braked disc 28; and resilient means 32, 33 are included to permit a limited relative rotation between the shaft 10 and the disc 28. According to the invention the resilient means 32, 33 are springs arranged to act in opposite directions of rotation to give substantially equal resilience in either direction of rotation, and the braked disc 28 is arranged to exert a braking effect that is not dependent on the direction of rotation. As shown the springs 32, 33 are coil springs mounted so as to be of opposite hand and during attachment they are pre-stressed in opposite directions of rotation. The braking device is a plate 37 that is mounted at one end on a hinge 36 and carries at its other end two blocks 38 that are bored to slidably receive two braking pads 39 engaging opposite faces of the disc 28. These pads are biased into contact with the disc 28 by pivoted levers 40 acted on by a spring 43. Screws 44 are provided to give a coarse adjustment of the braking effect exerted by the pads 39. The position of the plate 37 about the hinge 36 may be adjusted by screws 45 to give a fine adjustment of the braking effect exerted by the pads 39.
