Headings DID A variable stroke traversing mechanism, for example for a thread guide of a yarn winding machine or the ring table of a downtwister, comprises two slides 1,2, Fig. 2, guided for parallel motion, means for causing slide 1 to have a fixed stroke, a coupling member 8 interconnecting the two slides at pivot points 10 and 18, the coupling member 8 being slidable on the pivot 10, a guide 20 normal to and carried by the slide 1, a guide 16 that is mounted on a fixed fulcrum 17 at an adjustable angle α to the slide 1 to vary the stroke of the slide 2, and an arm 14 rigid with the coupling member 8 and on which arm 14 is slidably mounted a guide member 19, the guide member 19 being slidable also along the guides 16 and 20. The pivot point 18 is adjustably mounted on the slide 1. The mechanism ensures that if the slide 1 has a velocity V1 then the slide 2 will have a proportional velocity V2 given by:- V 2 = V 1 (1-b/s tan α) where b = the distance between the slider 1, 2. s = the distance between the pivot point 18 and the guide 20. The change of stroke of the slide 2 is proportional to the movement of a slide 22 acting on the guide 16. The slide 2 may be given the fixed stroke in which case the slide 1 will have the variable stroke. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the linkage system described with reference to Fig. 2 is used at both ends of the slides 1 and 2, the guide 29 being mounted on a fixed fulcrum 30 spaced from the slide 1 and in line with the fixed fulcrum 17 and pivot points 18, the distance between the fixed fulcra 17 and 30 being equal to the distance between the guides 20 and 28. With this construction, if the slide 1 is traversed such that its guide 28 is always over the fulcrum 30 at the end of the right hand travel of the slide 1 then the slide 2 will always have the same extreme left hand position irrespective of the angle to which the guides 16, 29 are set. In this way the thread guide 3 will build up a thread package having a flat end surface at its left hand end and a conical surface at its right hand end, the taper of the conical end depending upon the rate at which the slide 22 is lowered. The construction according to Fig. 3 is stated to have a smoother movement of the guide member 19 and 27 as compared with the guide member 19 in Fig. 2.
