978,383. Magnesium and like lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 26, 1961], No. 47911/62. Heading G2L. A photoflash lamp having a transparent envelope 1, e.g. of glass, contains actinic material 8 which is unoxidised thorium in oxygen or an oxygen-bearing gas. The thorium metal is at least 95% pure and the proportion of thorium to oxygen is preferably between 5 and 25 milligrams of thorium per cc. of oxygen at atmospheric pressure. Primer material 7 coating the ends of leads 5 at the junction with a bridge wire 6 may be a powdered mixture of a combustible metal such as zirconium and potassium chlorate or potassium perchlorate held together by a binder such as nitrocellulose. The bridge wire 6 may be of tungsten. Instead of using foil or wire 8, the thorium may be included in the primer beads 7, which are then made larger. The thorium is used in powder form and replaces the zirconium. Ammonium perchlorate may be used instead of potassium perchlorate.
