Abstract

1,203,857. 857. Flash-bulbs. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Aug.23, 1968 [Aug.23, 1967], No.40500/68. Heading G2L. [Also in Division C1] A flash-bulb adapted to be percussively ignited comprises a glass envelope containing a combustion-supporting gas, e.g. oxygen, and shredded combustible metal, e.g. zirconium, and a base secured to the envelope and containing a fulminating charge comprising particles of percussively detonatable material and a powdered combustible metal together with particles of an abrasive inert filler. The interior of the base and the interior of the envelope are in communication with one another so that when the charge is detonated the particles of combustible metal are heated to incandescence and blown into the envelope where they ignite the shredded combustible metal. The charge preferably has the following composition: a) 15-80% by weight of a mixture of phosphorus and potassium chlorate, the phosphorus constituting one fifth to one half of the mixture. b) up to 50% by weight of powdered zirconium, hafnium and/or thorium, the powder having a particle size of the order of 0À5 to 5 microns. c) up to 50% by weight of powdered silica, titania, zirconia, silicon carbide or fused aluminium oxide having a particle size between 100 and 200 microns. d) up to 1% weight of a particulate material capable of reacting with any phosphoric acid present to form a salt, preferably particles of an alkaline earth metal oxide such as magnesium oxide. e) a dessicant such as silica gel. f) between 0À25 and 4% by weight of a binder such as hydroxyethyl-cellulose, nitrocellulose or methyloxycellulose. In a modification the charge is divided into two portions containing the phosphorus and potassium chlorate, respectively, the balance of the ingredients being mixed with one or other of the portions. The two portions are placed in contact with one another in the base. The flashbulb may be of the form described in Specification 1, 203, 858.
